County addresses (Clayton, Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Florissant, Chesterfield) record with the St. Louis County Recorder at 41 S. Central Avenue in Clayton. Filing at the wrong office is a genuinely common out-of-town mistake, and we confirm the right one before the signing.

Wait — St. Louis City isn't in St. Louis County?

Correct, and it surprises even some locals. The city voted to separate from the county in 1876 (locals call it the Great Divorce) and it has run as an independent city ever since, with its own circuit court, assessor, and recorder.
